For generations, Hotel La Perla has been part of the collective memory of La Paz, Baja California Sur. Families gathered for Sunday meals, couples celebrated weddings, and children grew up visiting the property overlooking the city’s malecón. Following an extensive renovation, the historic hotel is entering a new chapter as Perla La Paz, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. For General Manager Roberto Abbagnale, reopening also means welcoming back the community that has been part of the hotel’s history.

Built in 1940, La Perla has long held a special place in the destination’s history. Abbagnale, who has spent nearly three decades in international hospitality, was struck by the emotional response he encountered upon arriving in La Paz. Residents shared stories of grandparents bringing them to the hotel, family celebrations, and milestones experienced within its walls. “We have a great responsibility,” he says, explaining that the renovation and introduction of international standards go hand in hand with reconnecting the property with the local community.
One of the clearest examples is Restaurante Terraza, located on the ground floor facing the malecón. Once a gathering place where locals came to enjoy coffee, read their newspaper, and catch up with friends, the restaurant is returning with its familiar menu. Preserving La Perla’s history also means bringing back the people who helped shape it. More than 95% of the hotel’s team is local, according to Abbagnale, including former employees who spent decades at the property. Among them is the head of the storeroom, who previously worked there for 25 years, alongside returning waiters, cooks, and other longtime staff members.
“It’s not a new hotel. It is a hotel that is reopening, but it is also a hotel that reconnects with the community,” he explains.

The hotel now operates under the Tapestry Collection by Hilton brand, retaining its individual identity while gaining access to Hilton’s global distribution network, booking channels, technology, and Hilton Honors loyalty program. These resources broaden its commercial reach and help introduce the property to international travelers. Hilton’s brand standards also provide a framework for consistent service and operational quality, supporting the hotel’s local character and personal approach to hospitality.
The property introduces new gathering spaces, including a rooftop overlooking La Paz and Patio Balandra, designed to evoke the atmosphere of a European plaza. For Abbagnale, these spaces offer new ways for both residents and visitors to enjoy the hotel.
His connection to La Paz is also personal. His parents in law have lived in the city for two decades, and he purchased a home there more than ten years ago. After living in Asia for several years, returning to the region with his family felt like a natural decision. Among the hotel’s spaces, the rooftop has made a particular impression on him. Having visited many properties throughout his career, he admits that few places still leave him speechless. Patio Balandra also holds special appeal, reminding him of his younger years in Europe, when sitting outdoors over coffee and watching people pass by was part of everyday life.
His approach to leadership reflects that appreciation for human connection. Having lived in 11 countries, Abbagnale understands that hospitality requires more than established procedures. “There are many standards, checklists, and processes, but the day to day is an art,” he explains. Technology and operational systems support the business, but understanding people remains essential. The ability to adapt to different personalities, cultures, and expectations, he believes, is what creates memorable experiences.
As La Paz continues attracting international attention, Abbagnale hopes its growth will not come at the expense of the qualities that make the destination distinctive. “I would like La Paz to remain this Mexican place,” he says, reflecting on the importance of protecting its identity. He hopes La Perla can contribute by introducing more travelers to the destination while remaining connected to its community, welcoming back familiar faces and giving new guests a place in its continuing story.
